Uncovering Rwanda’s Resilience and Innovativeness: A Journey into Climate-Induced Displacement

In the summer of 2023, I arrived in Rwanda with three priorities in mind. First, I sought to comprehend how climate change and environmental degradation manifested at the local level. While a global perspective is valuable when addressing climate change, understanding local impacts is paramount. Second, I delved into the discourse surrounding the imperative of catalyzing climate finance. We are falling far short of the required funds to effectively combat the crisis, which must be a global priority moving forward. Consequently, I aimed to delve into the roles of both the public and private sectors. Lastly, I examined the involvement of key multilateral institutions.

Bridging the Sustainable Infrastructure Gap: Environmental Disclosure Data

his past summer, I served as a Sustainable Infrastructure Fellow with the Cities, States, and Regions (CSTAR) team at CDP, based in their New York office. My internship commenced in June 2023 with the annual CDP US Workshop in New York, focused on the energy transition and drawing participation from a diverse group of experts, spanning those in environmental disclosure, non-profits, financial services, and corporations. I also had the opportunity to join CDP’s annual team days, which involved exciting team building and ice-breaker activities on an old barge in Brooklyn to get to know the CSTAR team. This marked an exciting start to my next 10 weeks at CDP.

Modeling Groundwater Depletion and Sea Level Rise

There is general scientific consensus that global mean sea level (GMSL) has risen in the 20th century and at an accelerating rate. This rise is expected to continue throughout the 21st century, with many contributing factors attributable to observed climate change, both natural and anthropogenic. Two primary drivers of sea level rise (thermal expansion of warming seawater and melting of ice sheets and glaciers) account for the bulk of this change, but several other groups of processes also contribute to varying degrees. One such factor is land water storage (LWS), which is generally defined as all forms of terrestrial water excluding land ice, which is modeled separately. Changes in LWS will alter the fluxes of freshwater with the oceans, contributing to a changing GMSL.

Envisioning a Greener Future: Transforming VoTech Education through Environmental Justice

This summer, as part of a groundbreaking research project at Tufts University, I embarked on a mission to weave environmental justice into the fabric of vocational technical (VoTech) education. The urgency of climate change and the evolving job market demands a new approach to vocational training –  one that embraces sustainability and equity. Thanks to the Tufts CREATE Fellowship, my team and I were empowered to conduct an interdisciplinary study that could potentially reshape vocational education for future generations.
